Campground occupancy rates

In 1995, the occupancy rate for campground sites was 62.81%, with 81,526 sites available. In 2000, this rate was 61.2%, with 93,734 sites available. Over the past five years, the number of sites has increased to more than 11,000, with a stable occupancy rate. All things considered, this means that more people are taking up camping in Quebec and that the accommodation capacity has also been growing.

This information is taken from Statistiques Touristiques 2000, "La fréquentation des terrains de camping du Québec de 1996 à 2000", from Tourisme Québec.

Camping, an attractive leisure

Camping in Quebec is always in fashion!

120,000 households went camping in 2000, and 4.6 overnight stays are sold every year. Camping in Quebec is definitely the “in” thing to do!

Camping is attracting more and more enthusiasts all the time. Along with biking and swimming, it is one of Quebeckers’ favourite summer outdoor activities. It’s also a perfect option for families interested in spending their holidays outdoors, from May to October.

Who goes camping?
Profile of Quebec campers

Quebec households who go camping or RVing fall into two categories:
- seasonal campers (42%), who set up on a campground for the entire season, generally from mid-May to late October;
- travellers (58%), who use campgrounds as stepping stones while they explore the country, moving from one campground to another depending on their travel plans.

Camping households also fall into different categories when it comes to their equipment:
- 39% use a tent
- 51% use a trailer
- 10% use a motorhome

In 2000, it was estimated that 670,000 households owned at least one piece of camping equipment, be it a tent or tent trailer, sleeping bag, gas stove, lamp, etc. These estimates are based on an annual growth rate of 3.5% for tents and 7.5% for recreational vehicles (RVs).
